Hi Tech US NAVY

U.S. Navy takes major step towards its first ‘rail gun’ – a hi-tech electromagnetic weapon that fires projectiles at 5,000MPH (video)

U.S Navy are one step closer to creating a ‘rail-gun’. If  you are wondering what a rail gun is.. it’s  a high tech electromagnetic weapon  that fires at 5,000mph. I know ti sounds like something out fo the movies but this is how far advanced the worlds leading nations are with their defence mechanisms.
Its not just the fact that it fires at such an incredible speed but that it can fire for a huge distance too, reportedly over 100′s of miles.
Joe Biondi- vice president of Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business, which received the contract said :’This new system will dramatically change how our Navy engages enemies,’
Instead of relying on an explosive propellant such as gunpowder, the railgun uses a giant surge of electrical energy to fire the bullet at speeds approaching Mach 8

There has been a test version already trialled for a year and the Navy reported it has been fired 100′s of times so they know it works. It doesn;t fire explosive it just fired projectiles because the force at which the object will impact what ever it is hitting is more than enough to do the damage required.
It is said that a projectile could reach a target 290 miles away in less tha six minutes… crazy! Naval Research Laboratory Commanding Officer, Capt. Paul Stewart said: ‘A railgun weapons system must be able to launch hundreds of projectiles and withstand extreme pressures, currents and temperatures.
Programme manager Roger Ellis said: ‘People see these things in the video games, but this is real.
